Volvo automaker has confirmed that by 2019, it will introduce a Tesla-rivalling fully-electric car. Moreover, it will offer a plug-in hybrid version of every model it sells within four years, and expects them to account for 10 percent of its sales by 2020.
It is still very little informaton on the fully electric Volvo car that is expected to appear by 2019, but reports point towards it being a SUV in a similar vein to the recently revealed Tesla Model X and the upcoming Audi Q6 e-tron. Whatever the case may be, the car will have an impressive range in excess of 500 km.
Beyond launching an electric model, the Swedish automaker has confirmed that it will offer plug-in hybrid variants of both the upcoming Volvo S90 and S60 sedans. Plug-in hybrids are a good way for automakers to meet increasingly strict carbon emission standards in the US and Europe, as well as China, where regulators are pushing for more electric vehicles. They run on gas or electricity, so consumers need not face range anxiety. Volvo says drivers will be able to do half of their driving in fully electric mode.
